color me ignorant...

so i'm chatting with a coworker this morning about the general election happening on Thursday, and i comment that the pubs will be surely packed that night, between watching the election results and cinco de mayo...

and then my coworker looks at me like i've got three heads and he's like 'what cinco de mayo?' and i'm all, 'you know, cinco de mayo??! major drinking holiday??? ' and i even start singing him the song... when suddenly i get this funny feeling like i should know better, so i consult the internet, and sure enough, cinco de mayo is a mexican holiday, which would explain why it's not a big deal to countries on the other side of the planet. GOD i love being an ignorant american.....
